Officials Say Road Conditions Improving After Crashes

A number of crashes and slide-offs slowed traffic around Indiana this morning, but state officials say roadways are in good condition in light of the early snowfall.

Nathan Riggs is the Indiana Department of Transportation public information director for Indianapolis. He says they're in clean-up mode – interstates are wet, and crews are out to clear the accumulated slush.

He says cold weather may have led to dangerous slick spots on the road.

"With the blowing areas of snow and with the air temperatures dropping, those areas can quickly refreeze," Riggs said. "Whether or not that caused the crashes this morning is yet to be determined."

Riggs says sunshine is helping with the melting process.

The National Weather Service says a new surge of arctic air blows into the state later today.
