Opponents Hope Judge Will Block Eagle Creek Park Deer Hunt

Opponents of a controlled deer hunt are hoping a Marion County judge will block it come Wednesday.

Indianapolis attorney Arend Abel says the city hasn‘t followed proper procedures in setting up what he says is actually a "deer kill" set to take place in Eagle Creek Park this weekend.

However, Indy Parks spokesperson Lesley Gordon says the city‘s deer management program is needed to help control deer overpopulation in the Eagle Creek Park area. She says the deer population is about ten times what it should be.

Gordon says the hunt won't be public.

Various agencies including the Department of Public Safety, Department of Public Works, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and IMPD will work with Wounded Warriors, a group of disabled military veterans, who will take part in the controlled hunt.

Gordon adds that the park will be closed to the general public this coming weekend for the event.

However, Abel says the city hasn‘t calculated the actual deer population in the are, among other issues.

The injunction hearing is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. before Marion County Superior Court Judge Robert Altice Jr.
