The North Putnam Community School Corporation is being sued over refusal to allow the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance among students.
The suit was filed by the ACLU of Indiana, which was successful in a similar case in the Town of Munster.
ACLU of Indiana Legal Director Ken Falk says the law is clear.
"There is no excuse for the school district‘s intransigence," he says, adding that the denial violates both federal law and the U.S. Constitution.
The would-be alliance claims that LGBT students at the school have been frequently harassed, and advocates for the group want the alliance to educate the community and support vulnerable students.
