State Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, is retiring and will not seek re-election next year.
The 67-year-old senator, who is also a family practice attorney, says he wants to spend more time with his family and at his law practice.
Steele has served in the Indiana Senate since 2002, when he was appointed to succeed Becky Skillman, who became lieutenant governor.
He had previously served in the state House of Representatives from 1995 to 2002.
Steele says he still has several things he wants to accomplish in the next legislative session, including passing a different version of an adoption records bill he championed but failed to pass last session.
