Bill Would Lead To Fewer Polling Places

Democrats charge a bill to make it easier to replace precinct polling places with vote centers, which could hinder voter turnout.

Nineteen counties have switched to centralized vote centers since the state began experimenting with the idea in 2007.

Supporters argue it cuts costs by requiring fewer polling places, and puts them near where people are already working or shopping.

But a House committee is considering a bill to remove the requirement that both parties agree to make the switch.

The county clerk holds the tiebreaking vote on the bipartisan three-member local election boards, and David Ober,R-Albion, authored a bill which would let a simple majority institute vote centers.
