Much Of State Bracing For Bitter Cold, More Winter Weather

Sleet, snow and bitter temperatures will arrive in much of Indiana this weekend, with the National Weather Service issuing a Winter Storm Warning Friday for Indiana regions south of Marion County. Central regions of the Hoosier state are placed under a Winter Weather Advisory.

A new record was set for the lowest high temperature in Indianapolis at 9 degrees Thursday. The National Weather Service says the previous record was 12 degrees, which was set in 1885.

The Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Saturday, and a Wind Chill Advisory will remain in effect for much of the area until 11 a.m. Friday morning.

Meteorologists predict wind chill values will fall between -15 and -24 degrees. The low temperature in Bloomington reached -16 degrees Friday morning.

National Weather Service hydrologist Al Shipe says this is the coldest weather for the state this winter. He says it occurred in southern Indiana as a result of deep snow pack, clear skies and calm winds.
