The City of Bloomington recognized the 14th anniversary of 9/11 with a ceremony Friday outside City Hall.
Tom Hanify, president of the Metropolitan Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana, talked about the growing importance of remembering the day as years go on.
"If you just came into Bloomington today as a freshman, you were four years old when this happened. Young people don't know what happened, and what that meant. And I don't think they really understand how this horrible war started, that we're all subject to today," Hanify said.
Hanify said on top of the approximately 3,000 lives lost on 9/11, there have been about 3,200 cases of cancer among those who were working at Ground Zero, caused by inhaled and absorbed carcinogens.
During the ceremony, along with a performance of "Taps" and a three-volley gun salute, the laying of a wreath symbolized the lives lost in the 2001 attack.
