The beach at Paynetown State Recreation area along Lake Monroe reopened Thursday after being closed for weeks due to high water.
Near-record rainfall earlier this summer caused Lake Monroe to rise about 11.5 feet above normal levels. That forced the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to close all beaches along the lake.
The DNR hopes Lake Monroe's remaining beaches will reopen by Labor Day weekend.
"We are still at about four-foot high so there is still high water and that's keeping us from opening the Fairfax beach until probably next week," says property manager James Roach.
Because water levels are still high, Roach says people need to use extra caution while swimming and boating.
