Sunday Alcohol Sales Bill Dies In Committee

Hoosiers won't be able to buy alcohol in stores on Sundays anytime soon.

A bill that would have allowed Sunday sales met the same fate as many similar bills before it — the measure was quickly voted down five to eight in the House public policy committee.

Several members of the committee, including Representative Ed Clere, R-New Albany, cited concerns about access to alcohol in pharmacies and grocery stores.

"I especially have concerns about the placement and display and access to hard liquor," Clere said.

But Representative Tom Dermody says his bill has nothing to do with those issues.

"I believe if that was a big issue we would have been filled with bills to deal with that in this session," he said.

Dermody proposed a more comprehensive Sunday sales bill last session, but the measure died on the House floor.

President of the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers Patrick Tamm released a statement after the vote, saying, ""We are pleased to see the committee recognize a necessary comprehensive public policy solution regarding how and where alcohol is sold."
