Amos Brown Posthumously Awarded State's Highest Honor

Gov. Mike Pence used his annual Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony to award the highest honor in his power to Amos Brown, the longtime Indianapolis broadcaster who died in November.

Pence presented the Sachem Award to Brown's family on Thursday at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

Previous Sachem Award winners include medical device entrepreneur and philanthropist William "Bill" Cook, and gospel couple Bill and Gloria Gaither.

The award was created by then-Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2006.

During his address, Pence said King's courage "pricked the conscience of a nation," and the annual holiday is a chance to teach younger generations about King's legacy.
