Columbus To Vote On Banning Chickens Within City Limits

The Columbus City Council will vote Tuesday night on whether to classify chickens as farm animals, which would ban the animals from living within the city limits.

The council voted 5-2 in favor of amending the city's animal care ordinance in late June.

Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop says the issue first came up about a year ago, when some residents complained about chickens in the city. Some said chickens were getting loose and making their way into neighbor's yards. Others cited health concerns or fear of drawing hawks and foxes into the city.

Opponents of the proposal say residents keep chickens for many reasons and that residents mostly follow the current guidelines.

"For some folks it's an emotional issue and that's something the city council members are taking into account," Mayor Lienhoop says.

The council will vote at its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Follow Jessica Yarvin on Twitter at @JYarvin for updates from the meeting.
