HUD Awards Nearly $18 Million To Indiana Agencies Aiding Homeless

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding  nearly $18 million in grants to Indiana organizations that provide assistance to the homeless.

The money will help 105 programs throughout the state that offer housing and social services to the vulnerable population.

The money will help non-profits provide housing and social services to the state's homeless population.

Stepping Stones is a Bloomington-based organization that provides transitional housing for homeless youth.

Residential Coordinator Alysia Elwood says Stepping Stones will receive more than $80,000 from the grant. She says it is their largest source of funding and helps pay for insurance, transportation and housing.

"It pays for some of those kind of back-of-office expenses that maybe aren't quite as enticing for local donors to provide funding for," Elwood says.

Crawford Apartments in Bloomington will get $411,171 to help address the housing needs of those who've been without a home for several years. The facility can house up to 28 people and a second, larger apartment complex with the same mission will open next fall.

HUD estimates nearly 6,000 people in Indiana were homeless this year.
