IU's Loss May Affect Tournament Seeding

With IU no longer in the Big Ten Tournament, Hoosier fans are wondering what that means for seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The seeding determines when and where the Hoosiers play next, and a high seed could mean an easier first round of games.

The selection committee takes in many factors in determining which teams are seeded. They look at the strength of a team's schedule, where a team gets their wins and losses, and a team's overall winning percentage. But, IU sports media professor Galen Clavio says the seeding is not determined through an equation.

"All of those things get kinda put together, but ultimately, it's humans. Those committee members that end up looking at each of those factors and making value judgments on what they think is good and not so good," says Clavio.

32 teams will get automatic bids for winning their respective conference tournaments. But for the big tournament, the selection committee will throw in and additional 36 teams, and rank everyone.

"From that they make a list made from best to… not worst, but close to worst and then figure out from there who is going to make it into the field," says Clavio.

Before the game on Friday, Clavio predicted a four seed for the Hoosiers if they were to lose. We'll have to wait until Sunday night to see if he is correct.
