Governor Mike Pence announced Monday that Indianapolis attorney Geoffrey Slaughter will be appointed as the new Supreme Court Justice.
Slaughter worked as special counsel to the Attorney General of Indiana from 1995 to 2001.
Announcing his choice for the Supreme Court Justice appointment, Governor Mike Pence said he received a hand-written note from former Justice Randall Shepard praising Indianapolis attorney Geoffrey Slaughter.
"He also said that Geoff Slaughter was a man who, throughout his career, demonstrated quote ‘real caring for working people who need legal help but cannot afford it,'" Pence says.
Slaughter will replace Justice Brent Dickson, who retired last month after serving on the Supreme Court since 1986. He says he has big shoes to fill.
"I'm not replacing Justice Dickson, nobody can do that," Slaughter says. "I'm merely succeeding him. But I'll do my best to try to live up to the values of professionalism and civility for which he's so well known."
Slaughter's appointment will be effective when he is officially sworn in. That day has yet to be announced.
