Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky have argued in federal court that Indiana's latest abortion restriction puts an inappropriate burden on women and doesn't serve any purpose other than to block their right to an abortion.
The group is seeking an injunction that would block Indiana from enforcing a clause in a bill passed in March. The clause adds an 18-hour waiting period to an existing requirement that a woman have an ultrasound before an abortion.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana's legal director says some women have to travel over 400 miles due to the scarcity of abortion providers in Indiana because the rule requires multiple clinic visits before an abortion can be performed.
The state's solicitor general argued the new law doesn't create an additional burden on women seeking an abortion.
