Traffic around Bloomington’s Fourth Street Garage will remain restricted until the new garage is complete.
Demolition began early last month and should be complete in the coming weeks as workers take apart the entire structure, piece by piece. The lane and site are blocked off for safety reasons, keeping traffic away from debris and construction equipment.
Director of Economic and Sustainable Development Alex Crowley says that drivers can expect no restriction changes between demolition and construction periods.
“My understanding is that probably not, unless there is a significant delay between the two events,” Crowley says.
Construction of the new garage is pending due to an eminent domain lawsuit with The JuanSells.com Realty Company.
Crowley says that some pieces of the demolished garage will be recycled, including steel and concrete. He says that while parking garages are not typically environmentally friendly, recycling and solar panels are in the works.
Officials hope to have the demolition and construction of the new garage completed by the end of 2020.
