9 Kokomo Officers Exposed To Chemical During Drug Investigation

Authorities say nine police officers were treated after being exposed to an unknown chemical while conducting a drug investigation in central Indiana.

The Kokomo Police Department says the officers encountered "some sort of chemical agent" while serving a search warrant at a home Tuesday night. Police say eight were taken to a hospital by ambulance and another was treated at the hospital.

Kokomo Police Captain Tonda Cockrell says officers experienced a shortness of breath and other difficulties.

"We know that it's a powder material, we do not know exactly what the chemical compound is. It's being sent for an evaluation at the lab," Cockrell says.

Two adults at the home and a juvenile also were treated. Police detained several people.

Kokomo Deputy Mayor David Tharp says all affected officers were alert and walking after being exposed to the chemical.

Cockrell says the officers were released from the hospital and were back to work Wednesday.
