New Archbishop Of Indianapolis Closes Chapter Of Priesthood

Bishop Charles Thompson was appointed last month to take over as Archbishop in Indianapolis after serving only six years as Bishop of Evansville. Thompson closed one chapter of his priesthood Thursday with a Mass of Thanksgiving.

Bishop Charles Thompson walked down the aisle one last time at Saint Benedict Cathedral in Evansville. He says the move is still surreal, but no matter where his faith takes him, he will always have a connection with the city.

"I'll find good people wherever I go, but there'll be new names, new faces, new personalities and it's that starting over again and leaving behind a part of me," Thompson says. "Part of me will stay in this cathedral, in this diocese, but part of them will go with me as well."

Later this month, Thompson will have a new title. At 56 years old, he will be the youngest American Archbishop when he takes over the Indianapolis Archdiocese.

"In a six year period, they're on their fourth bishop. So I think they're looking for a little more stability," Thompson says. "There's a lot of guys far more qualified than me, but maybe I think because I'm younger I'll have more time there."

Thompson will be the 7th Archbishop of Indianapolis.
