Bloomington City Council To Vote On Annexation Proposal

Bloomington City Council heard a multi-part proposal to annex almost 10,000 acres of county land.

The annexation would be the first move by a Bloomington mayor in more than a decade, and would bring in almost 15,000 thousand county residents.

Philipa Guthrie, the corporate council for the city says since it has been so long since the previous annexation, parts of the county have become indistinguishable from the city.

"The fact that they haven't happened in so long means that there are parts of the former two mile  fringe which have become urbanized, they really are part of the community, they look the city, they are just not within the boundaries," Guthrie says.

Most of the areas in the proposal have been intended for annexation for decades. The proposed plan would bring these areas in line with the rest of the city.

City Council is slated to vote on the proposal next week. If approved the measure would receive six public meeting for city official to provide more information about the plan.

Correction: a previous version of this story said the the annexation proposal would include "almost 1,000 acres."
