The Owen County Recycling Center will close this Saturday, despite public outcry. County officials say the center lost too much money from processing trash to be sustainable.
The council and commissioners met this week to potentially appropriate the funds to keep the facility open, but decided the center will still close.
Eugene Brown, an employee at the center, says although a different, new recycling facility recently opened, the Owen County Recycling Center was a cheaper option for some people.
"A lot of the older people in the community that don't have a large income, they only have one or two bags a week," Brown says. "So, you're going to pay 35, 40 dollars for trash service, when you can come here and drop it off for a couple bucks."
Brown says since he began working at the center in August, the staff made changes to increase revenue for the facility, but it wasn't enough.
