Proposed Budget Doubles Funding For 'Endangered Adults' Program

Governor Eric Holcomb's proposed budget would more than double program funding for Indiana's Adult Protective Services, or APS.

The APS program investigates reports of endangered adults, meaning an adult incapable of handling his or her own affairs.

A study published in December highlighted problems with the program stemming from low funds. It pointed to problems with staffing levels, response time and technology.

Governor Holcomb's proposed budget increases the program's funding by 3 million dollars, raising it to $5.5 million.

Jim Gavin, Director of Communication for the Indiana Family and Social Services Association, says now it's a waiting game.

"We're in a situation right now where we're continuing to work with the Indiana Prosecuting Attorney's Council and the Indiana General Assembly as they are in session on the recommendations contained within the report," Gavin says.

The study says the additional funding could create a 24-hour help hotline, an emergency placement service for endangered adults, and 18 new case monitors.
