Terre Haute officials broke ground on what's being a called a major "first step" in redeveloping the city's Wabash riverfront.
Indianapolis based Core Redevelopment is investing $23 million to the vacant American Can building into 165 market-rate apartments. The building was also home to Pillsbury, ICON Transportation and most recently owned by Indiana State University.
Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett says the location near ISU provides an excellent opportunity for economic development west of U.S. 41. He says the city will improve the roads, lighting, sidewalks and landscaping while the project is being completed.
"You're talking about things that are really important to somebody who's moving into a brand new apartment. They need to be able to walk and bike away from there and of course drive in and out of there with quality infrastructure," Bennett says.
The redevelopment is part of the city's Riverscape project and is expected to be open in mid-2018.
