The city of Bloomington now has the money it needs to keep the Shalom Community Center open seven days a week.
Cook Group is donating $22,000 – which is nearly all the money the city needed to raise from the private sector to extend Shalom's hours.
Hamilton says the Cook donation means the city can possibly shift any additional contributions to other project's aimed at helping the city's homeless population.
"This is kind of a first step together, and when we do this successfully together I think we will be looking at more in the future. Having businesses step up with more than we needed for this first step is great because we will need some more going forward," Hamilton says.
Extending Shalom's hours from five days to seven days a week was one of several recommendations the Safety, Civility and Justice task force put forward.
It came with a price tag of $65,000. One third was to come from businesses and the rest would be covered by the city and the county.
Hamilton says Shalom will begin its extended hours soon, but declined to release a specific date.
