HUD Awards Grant To Terre Haute To Address Public Housing

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $178,500 to Terre Haute to improve public housing in the area. Terre Haute is the only city in Indiana to receive funding.

The grant is part of a HUD program that awards money nationwide to help pay for service coordinators who work with residents and connect them with opportunities for education and employment, as well as other resources.

Deputy Regional Director for the HUD Midwest – Chicago Regional Office Jim Cunningham says the program aims to provide residents with the resources to become self-sufficient.

"Job training, job placement programs, access to computers, access to financial literacy," Cunningham says. "Anything that can give residents the skills to boost their economic standing, their well-being, to promote self-sufficiency."

HUD announced the grant winners in a press release this week.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in the release that "investing in families living in public housing is an investment for a brighter future for themselves and their children. This funding helps our local partners get public housing residents tools they need to gain economic and housing independence."

HUD is currently accepting applications for the 2017 grants.
