A fundraising campaign benefiting the family of a police officer fatally shot last week in Indianapolis has collected more than $80,000 to date.
Southport Police Chief Thomas Vaughn set up the GoFundMe campaign after Lt. Aaron Allan was slain July 27, allegedly by a motorist he was trying to help following a car crash. The 38-year-old Allan was a six-year veteran of the department in Southport, a municipality on Indianapolis' south side.
The campaign that aims to collect $300,000 for Allan's widow and two sons had raised more than $83,000 by Wednesday morning.
An Indianapolis man is charged with murder in Allan's killing. Authorities say 28-year-old Jason D. Brown shot Allan as he tried to help Brown after his car overturned.
Authorities haven't disclosed a possible motive in the slaying.
