The Loogootee Library will get some help funding its new building thanks to a former resident.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded Loogootee a $1.1 million rural development loan to build a library three times the current size. The library is trying to raise $200,000 toward construction costs to reduce that loan amount.
And, a Loogootee native wants to help.
Starting Monday, that person will match donations to the library for 60 days, with a cap of $20,000.
Library Director Darla Wagler says she was shocked to get the call.
"Well you just dream of those kind of donations," she says. "So I was just kind of in awe and blown away that they were doing such a generous thing. And, how do you repay people that generous?"
People can drop off donations in person, or mail them to the library. There’s also a link to donate using PayPal on the library’s website.
The library is working with Friends of Loogootee Library, a non-profit organization, on fundraising efforts. They have several events planned over the coming months to try and raise additional money.
