Janet McCabe (director, Environmental Resilience Institute), Matt Flaherty (Bloomington City Council, At-Large), Andrew Predmore (director of Sustainability, Indiana University), and Alex Crowley (director, City of Bloomington Economic and Sustainable Development Department) talked on WFIU's Noon Edition, addressing questions about climate change.
Janet McCabe (director, Environmental Resilience Institute), Matt Flaherty (Bloomington City Council, At-Large), Andrew Predmore (director of Sustainability, Indiana University), and Alex Crowley (director, City of Bloomington Economic and Sustainable Development Department) talked on WFIU's Noon Edition, addressing questions about climate change.

Last week, sustainability experts and city officials shared their thoughts on how Bloomington could be more environmentally friendly.

Matt Flaherty will begin his term on Bloomington’s City Council in 2020. He spoke about social equity and sustainability.

Flaherty says city government needs policy in place that incentivizes greener choices, rather than holding the individual accountable.

He says affordable housing in walkable areas would reduce the number of people commuting to work by car.

“I think enhancing our transit system with either bus rapid transit or other tools, like possibly a circulator shuttle to connect parking downtown, would be helpful," he says.

Flaherty says equity is crucial when developing environmentally sustainable policy.

Bloomington will soon undergo a climate vulnerability assessment to help the city look at what structural changes need to happen.
