Local Organizations To Host Climate Sit-In At City Hall Friday

Multiple environmental activism groups will protest at Bloomington City Hall Friday as part of a national climate strike.

A joint news release from Golden Bicycle Extinction Rebellion and the local and Indiana University chapters of Fridays For Future and the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) says the organizations will band together to fight “business as usual” at the sit-in from 2 to 5 p.m.

This is the latest move by local climate activists to bring awareness to the issue of climate change.

In September, students across the world -- and Bloomington -- walked out of class as part of the Global Climate Strike.

Friday’s sit-in is part of the Sunrise Movement’s national climate strike, which will coincide with the fifth day of the United Nation’s annual climate change conference being held this year in Madrid.

Golden Bicycle’s demands to the City of Bloomington are as follows:

  • Declare a climate emergency
  • Commit to net zero [emissions] by 2040
  • Develop a concrete plan
  • Get tree coverage to 60%
  • Expand funding for sustainable housing, transit and the local food economy

Organizers say attendees will be able to engage local elected officials about climate issues.
