Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) is standing behind President Trump, despite expressing concerns about the call at the center of ongoing impeachment hearings.
Braun says President Donald Trump’s conduct during a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was inappropriate, but not impeachable.
"Some of that kind of approach does end up hurting the President—wouldn’t have done it myself, many others would feel the same way simply because it complicates things," Braun says.
The U.S. House of Representatives drafted two articles of impeachment announced Tuesday.
The articles say President Trump exercised an abuse of power by “soliciting the Government of Ukraine to publicly announce investigations that would benefit his reelection” and that he obstructed Congress by directing “Executive Branch agencies, offices and officials not to comply with those subpoenas.”
Braun says unless new evidence is brought forth, he won’t vote to impeach.
"I don’t expect any new information," the Senator says. "It will be a little bit anti-climactic for that reason, but it certainly gives the President his chance to tell his side of the story."
In order for the articles to be advanced to the Senate, they must first be approved by the House. The Senate would then try the case with individual Senators effectively serving as jurors.
