MCCSC Preps E-Learning Alternative In Case Of Coronavirus Outbreak

Monroe County Community School Corp. officials are preparing for the COVID-19 virus to impact Indiana students and families.

On Tuesday, MCCSC sent a letter to families detailing the district’s plan to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, which has been reported in 12 states, including Illinois, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The letter says schools will continue its “deep and safe cleaning practices” and emphasize hand-washing practices at the elementary level.

In the event that MCCSC needs to close one or more facilities, the letter says schools will rely on e-learning. In preparation, students in grades 3-6 will be given their devices to bring home on March 4 to practice using the devices and connecting to the internet.

Additionally, the letter says MCCSC is working with the United States Dept. of Agriculture to prepare to provide food options for low-income students during any extended school closure. Data from the Indiana Dept. of Education shows more than a third of students at MCCSC are “economically disadvantaged.”

A Feb. 28 memo from IDOE instructed schools to review their pandemic plans and monitor students for any signs of illness.
