Indiana University’s continual COVID-19 testing as cut Monroe County’s positivity rate in half.
Monroe County’s seven-day positivity rate skyrocketed when IU began mass testing in August, but since IU continues to submit thousands of negative test results to the Indiana State Department of Health, the seven-day positivity rate for all tests has fallen from 10.6% on Sept. 6 to 5.3% on Tuesday.
The ISDH reported 48 new positive cases and 2,222 new tests in Monroe County, bringing the county totals to 2,474 cases and 72,406 tests — the majority of which have occurred on IU’s campus, testing students and staff. IU’s current data shows mitigation testing between Aug. 22 and Sept. 11 discovered 1,352 positive cases out of 25,081 tests — about 5.4%. Symptomatic testing between Aug. 1 and Sept. 11 administered only 1,472 tests but with a 40.2% positivity rate for 592 total cases.
Monroe County’s death toll remained the same at 36 for the 29th consecutive day.
Across Indiana, the ISDH reported 652 new cases confirmed on Sept. 21 and nine deaths that occurred between Sept. 6 and Sept. 21, increasing stat totals to 112,626 cases and 3,295 deaths. The state has administered 1,898,563 tests with a 4% seven-day positivity rate, and 759 Hoosiers are currently hospitalized because of COVID-19.
