Indiana’s COVID-19 numbers continue to worsen, while Monroe County is seeing progress mitigating the virus.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Monday 835 new cases in the state confirmed between Oct. 2 and Oct. 4 and seven additional deaths between Oct. 3 and Oct. 4. These numbers increased the state totals to 125,976 positive cases and 2,454 deaths. COVID-19 hospitalizations also increased to 1,019, which is the greatest number of Hoosiers hospitalized with the virus since May 31.
The average number of daily reported positive cases began increasing on Sept. 24, and after four consecutive days last week with more than 1,000 reported cases, the seven-day positive case average is now 1,100.

The increase in positive cases doesn’t appear to coincide with increased testing as the ISDH reported only 15,495 new tests — more than 5,000 less than the state’s average of 20,820 tests a day.
The state has administered 2,181,850 tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 4.8% according to ISDH data. This is 0.7 percentage points higher than last Monday.
The ISDH reported a continued decrease in Monroe County’s positivity rate. The county has administered 88,663 tests on 47,552 individuals with a seven-day positivity rate of 1.5%. According to ISDH data, another 24 residents tested positive, increasing the county total to 2,822 positive cases. The death toll remained at 37.
