Indiana University’s law school in Indianapolis is creating an endowed scholarship and professorship focusing on LGBTQ rights and diversity.
The Robert H. McKinney School of Law will fund them with a $4 million gift from IU alumnus Steve Tuchman and his husband, Reed Bobrick.
The university announced Friday that the professorship would go to an individual working on LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, or immigration law practice and policy.
It said the scholarship would go to a law student, and special consideration would be given to applicants from underrepresented populations. The university said such backgrounds could include the LGBTQ community, immigrants, first-generation Americans, financially challenged students, and students with diverse cultural experiences.
"It's part of the mission of Indiana University writ large -- and certainly the law school is part of that community," Karen Bravo, dean of the McKinney School of Law, said Monday. "The question of inclusion and diversity across a variety of axes is one that we are committed to so we're definitely delighted by the generosity of Mr. Tuchman and his spouse."
The university also plans to name the law school atrium in honor of the couple.
