Bloomington High School South won’t be playing football Friday night after its game was canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests.
The Panthers were scheduled to host Indianapolis Roncalli but the Monroe County Health Department called off practices Monday after the school administration reported the positive COVID tests.
“We had a couple of positive tests, then, with the contact tracing, we had a lot of players out,” South athletic director J.R. Holmes said Tuesday.
Holmes said the JV team canceled its game last week against Columbus North because of a COVID case and won’t play again this week. He said injuries have also sidelined several players.
The Panthers are 4-3 this season with one game now remaining on the schedule, an Oct. 16 home contest against Indianapolis Chatard.
Holmes is hoping South can get that game in.
“We have to see how it plays out,” Holmes said. “It’s up to the board of health, but we hope to play. We need to be up and practicing by Tuesday to be able to play on Friday.”
South is the second high school in Monroe County to lose a game to COVID-19. Bloomington North had its Sept. 25 game against New Albany canceled due to a positive test. The Cougars were able to resume their schedule the following week.
