A third year Notre Dame law student is defending her former professor and current nominee for a seat on the Supreme Court Nominee, Amy Coney Barrett.
Alyson Cox took a statutory interpretation class with Judge Barrett this year.
“She cares really deeply about her students, she’s incredibly fair,” Cox said.
Cox said Barrett takes a “textionalist”, approach to interpreting statutes, meaning she uses non-political, non-biased tools to form her positions on issues.
“Judge Barrett has challenged each of us to think more deeply about our legal philosophies, and she also always pushes us to think strongly about our counter arguments to our own positions,” Cox said.
Cox discussed her experiences with Barrett in an interview with the Article 3 project, a group created to defend President Trump’s judicial nominees.
Cox also co-authored a USA Today op-ed last month supporting Judge Barrett’s nomination.
“You don’t have to share her judicial philosophy to do exceptionally well in her classes, you just have to be a strong legal thinker and turn in a great legal paper,” Cox said.
Judge Barrett, who currently sits on the 7 th Circuit Court of Appeals, faced scrutiny from Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday during her confirmation hearings. Critics say Barrett was handpicked by President Trump so she can be the swing vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act.
