Monday kicks off Spencer Pride’s “Pride Week” celebrations, after the organization’s annual June festival was first postponed and then canceled because of COVID-19.
Usually, the festival draws a crowd of 5,000 people to the town’s courthouse square.

This week, Spencer Pride will host a variety of hybrid events where people can participate either online or in-person.
Jonathan Balash is the president of Spencer Pride. He says because the festival was canceled, connecting with the community in other ways is especially important.
“I hope that a lot of people do engage with us," he says. "I know it’s a hard time right now, but I think we all need a little celebration and this is an opportunity to do that.”
Some of the virtual activities include a dance party and drag queen story time. Other events, like Youth Pride on Tuesday, people can attend either by Zoom or in-person.
Balash adds it was important to offer both in-person and online opportunities to make Spencer Pride Week accessible to a wide audience.
