After presiding over one of the nation’s most successful university fundraising campaigns, Dan Smith is leaving Indiana University Foundation to return to the Kelley School of Business.

Smith served as IU Foundation president and CEO for eight years where he oversaw the five-year For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign. The campaign concluded last month, surpassing its $3 billion goal and raising nearly $3.9 billion, according to a university press release.

This campaign is the 12th largest university campaign completed in the past 10 years and the third largest among public universities.

"Under Dan's tireless leadership, the Bicentennial Campaign has ensured that IU's world-class education is affordable and accessible to the best students from Indiana and around the nation and world,” IU President Michael A. McRobbie said in the release.

The university release said Smith will step down at the end of the 2020 calendar year. J T. Forbes, CEO of the IU Alumni Association, will succeed him as interim president and CEO and retain his current position until the appointment of a new IU Foundation president.

Smith reportedly plans to teach and research at the Kelley School of Business where he taught for almost a quarter century and served as dean for eight years prior to joining the IU Foundation.
