IU Student Found Dead At University East Apartments Monday

A male student was reported dead Monday, after Indiana University Police went to the University East Apartments that morning for a welfare check.

Shannon Bunger is the Deputy Chief of Police for IUPD. He says a maintenance person had been doing work in the apartment and called IUPD, reporting they had trouble rousing the student resident.

Bunger says no foul play is suspected. An IU Health ambulance was sent to respond to the call along with IUPD.

“When our officers arrived, they did not try to revive him in any way," Bunger says. " It was clear that he had been dead for a little bit.”

He adds IUPD investigated the scene, and at that point the Monroe County Coroner takes over to determine cause of death and notify next-of-kin.

The county coroner, Joani Shields, said in an email that the student had underlying health conditions and appears to have died from natural causes.
