An upcoming proposal from City of Bloomington Utilities could increase water bills by the end of 2021.
The plan was introduced to the Utilities Service Board's finance subcommittee earlier in the week.
Utilities director Vic Kelson said the additional funds would go toward replacing old water mains and installing a new advanced water meter system to improve water quality.
"Our objective is to account for an increase in costs for operations and maintenance," Kelson said.
Kelson said average customer rates would raise between $2.50 and $3.75 per month, or about an extra $45 for the year.
The finance committee is scheduled to listen to more presentations on the rate increase on Jan. 11 and Jan. 19.
“Realistically the soonest it would likely go into effect would be the end of the year 2021 or early in the year 2022," Kelson said. "So, we’re looking at a year out basically.”
If the proposal is approved on Jan. 19, the issue would be brought in front of city council for a final vote sometime in early March.
