Updated: 3:38 p.m.

The Bartholomew County Consolidated School Corporation identified a student who was killed in a hit-and-run in Columbus Monday morning.

Lily Streeval, a junior at Columbus East High School, died after being taken to Columbus Regional Hospital.

“As a school corporation, we experienced a devastating loss this morning. Our hearts go out to Lily’s family, friends, classmates and teachers who loved and supported her. She was full of life and enjoyed attending Columbus East High School. Auto Tech had emerged as her favorite class and she was thinking about a career in this area. We will miss her greatly," Superintendent Dr. Jim Roberts said in a statement posted to the corporation's Facebook page.

Grief counselors are being provided to students and staff at Columbus East, and throughout the corporation.

A Bartholomew County high school student died after being struck by an SUV Monday morning. Officials say it happened in the 1900 block of South Gladstone Avenue around 7:00 a.m. as the student was trying to board a stopped school bus.

The suspect, 25-year-old-Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramani of Columbus, was arrested a short time after being followed by a witness. He was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and passing a stopped school bus.

“We are working closely with Bartholomew County School Corporation officials in regard to this investigation,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Major Chris Lane. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. A tragic event like this affects many people and we are thinking of everyone involved.”

The Columbus Police Department and Indiana State Police also responded to the scene.
