Monroe County remains in red advisory with slight drop in cases per 100,000

Monroe County confirmed 226 new  COVID-19 cases Wednesday, up from 209 Tuesday. In total, 24,503 county residents have tested positive since the pandemic began.

No new deaths were reported.

The county will remain is in the red advisory level this week along with the rest of the state. The weekly cases per 100,000 people dropped to 1,278 from 1,457 last week.

“We’re not continuing to rise, but we have a long way to go,” county health administrator Penny Caudill said. “Don‘t get too excited yet, but maybe it’s a glimmer of hope for us.”

In District 8, which includes Monroe, Brown and Bartholomew counties, COVID-19 hospitalizations remained steady at 162 patients. About 47 percent of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients and 10 percent are still available.

Between Jan. 13-19, more than 22 percent of people who took a COVID-19 test in Monroe County tested positive.  

State 

The state confirmed 5,536 new cases, which is down from 10,164 Tuesday. In total, 1,574,807 Hoosier have tested positive for COVID-19.  

Indiana also added 129 new deaths, bringing the state total to 20,296. 

For the week of Jan. 10, 98 percent of all COVID-19 cases in Indiana were the Omicron variant. This is up from 86 percent the previous week.  

The state’s seven-day positivity rate is now 30.5 percent, up slightly from 30.4 percent Tuesday.
