Bloomington is looking to learn if the proposed city hall expansion will work as a public safety headquarters. The city’s redevelopment commission (RDC) Monday approved three inspection contracts for the CFC Business Plaza, which it is looking to purchase for $9.25 million.

The RDC approved a $2,800 contract with BCA Environmental Consultants, a $15,000 contract with Tabor/Bruce Building Assessment, and a $50,000 contract with Springpoint Public Safety Analysis. In total, all three contracts are worth $67,800.
Tabor/Bruce will complete general, ‘due diligence’ inspections of the building, and Springpoint will determine if the building is suitable as a police headquarters.
Commissioner Deborah Meyerson asked why the city wouldn’t complete the due diligence inspection before it completed the specialized inspection, given something could stop the project.
Assistant city attorney Larry Allen said the city is trying to “walk and chew gum at the same time,” but expects Tabor/Bruce to report first. He also said the city has no indication from CFC that the general due diligence inspection would bring the project to a full stop.
The city announced in July plans to purchase the 62,000 square foot CFC Business Plaza. The RDC approved the agreement later that month, but city council still must approve the purchase.
The city has until Sept. 16 to complete inspections on the property.
