Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields confirmed Thursday that IU senior Avery McMillan died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Officers found the 20-year-old student from Valparaiso unresponsive in the home of 33-year-old Eric Montgomery on the morning of Aug. 17.

Montgomery had called the police, saying he had met McMillan the previous night near campus.

Police reports shared that officers administered three doses of Narcan to the unconscious woman, but they did not confirm a cause of death at the time.

Montgomery was arrested Aug. 30 during a traffic stop on charges of rape and serving alcohol to a minor.

The coroner’s office ruled the cause of death as Fluorofentanyl and Fentanyl Toxicity. An estimated 2,755 Hoosiers died from drug overdoses last year. About 85% of those deaths were opioid-related.
