IU Student Health Center offering free flu shot clinics

The IU Student Health Center is offering a series of free flu shot clinics through the end of October. The clinics are open only to current IU Bloomington faculty, staff and enrolled students.

Appointments are required and can only be scheduled online. However, students can get their flu shot when they are at the Student Health Center for any non-sick visit.

The clinics are offered on the first floor of the Student Health Center at 600 N. Eagleson Ave.

According to the Student Health Center’s website, the flu infects millions of Americans every year, resulting in an average of 24,000 deaths and over 200,000 hospitalizations.

Flu shots can help protect vulnerable groups from getting the flu. The groups that are the most vulnerable and at the highest risk are the elderly, infants and those with chronic medical conditions, according to the website.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all persons aged six months or older are recommended for annual flu vaccination.

How to prepare for getting a flu shot

  • Make an appointment online
  • Bring a photo ID and wear a short-sleeved shirt
  • Do not attend if you have COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms

What kind of vaccine is being offered?

  • Preservative-free, quadrivalent, single dose vaccine called Fluarix
  • Manufactured by GSK
  • Neither the high-dose vaccine for those over 65 nor the eggless vaccine will be available at the IU Bloomington clinics

What is the cost?

  • Free with most insurances, insurance information will be collected when appointments are scheduled
  • If a student does not have insurance, the shot is still free
