Low-income Monroe County residents and Indiana University students qualify for free tax assistance through the Maurer School of Law.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a partnership with United Way, will help people who make less than $60,000 a year file 2023 federal and state taxes. According to a press release, the service is offered until March 26. People should bring their W-2 forms, other income documents, Social Security cards and ID.

No appointment is required for resident taxpayers. VITA services are available at the Maurer School’s Baier Hall on Monday and Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30. To qualify, taxpayers cannot own a business or collect income from the sale of stocks, mutual funds and/or homes.

According to the release, 54 volunteers helped residents file 865 federal tax returns last year. The service saved clients as much as $395,000 in tax preparation fees and brought nearly $1 million in refunds and credits for tax returns.

VITA services will not be available during March 11-16, which is IU’s spring break.

Non-residents, like students who have been in the U.S. since 2019 or a scholar who has only been in the U.S. since 2022, can make an appointment by emailing VITA. IU Bloomington international students and scholars qualify for virtual tax assistance, but they should complete as much of their tax return as possible using Sprintax.

Additional free tax filing resources for non-student residents in Brown, Monroe and Owen county are available on the United Way website.
