People still have time to file their 2020 taxes

IRS's Stacy Engle said the website contains free filing resources for seniors, including information to help taxpayers filing on their own.

The deadline for the tax season is typically April 15th. But in 2020, the IRS moved the deadline back a month to May 17th due to COVID-19.

Taxpayers have three years to file their taxes if they’re owed a refund – meaning that if you haven’t filed for 2020 you have until May 17th this year to still get a refund.

Dave Miller is the owner of Miller and Company accounting and tax services. He urges everyone to file as quickly as possible.

“If you ever have to get a loan, if you want to buy a house, usually you have to have your tax returns up to date filed so that mortgage company or whoever might be loaning you money, they’re gonna want to get a transcript from the IRS to double check that information,” said Miller.

According to the IRS, there is over a billion dollars left unclaimed across the country with nearly 21 million dollars coming from Indiana alone.

Those who might be missing key documents like their W-2 can request copies from their employers or bank and help is available for free on the IRS website.

The IRS says taxpayers won’t face a penalty for not filing if a refund is due.
