Where to recycle your Christmas tree in Bloomington

City residents can leave their natural Christmas trees out to be collected by the Sanitation Department, or they can be taken to the Waste Reduction District.
City residents can leave their natural Christmas trees out to be collected by the Sanitation Department, or they can be taken to the Waste Reduction District.

The Waste Reduction District and the Bloomington Sanitation Department are taking natural Christmas trees this year. Here are the dates and times for those services this year.

The Waste Reduction District is accepting live Christmas trees for recycling from Dec. 26 to Jan. 11.

Trees will be accepted at any of the five locations during normal business hours. The District is also accepting natural wreaths and garlands. All lights and decorations must be removed before dropping off the tree.

The recycling centers will turn the donated trees into mulch. They also recommend opting for alternative ways to recycle the tree, such as cutting it down and composting it.

The sites will also take some artificial decorations, depending on the material

The Bloomington Sanitation Department has partnered with Bluestone Tree to collect natural trees and wreaths, according to Director Lazarus Sears.

If you have city trash collection, you can leave your Christmas tree curbside on your pickup day.

“We have Bluestone [Tree] that partners with us, they chip it and they compost it,” Sears said.

City tree collection will run from Jan. 2 through Jan. 31.

The city will also collect artificial trees. A large item pickup must be scheduled online or requested over the phone at 812-349-3443. The large item collection fee is $25.
