The Indiana Department of Transportation says its crews will install a three-way stop in Bloomington at the intersection of East 10th Street (State Road 45) and North Smith Road.
Work will begin Friday, weather permitting, and is expected to take one day to complete, INDOT said in a press release.
INDOT said installing new stop signs will improve safety by reducing right-angle crashes. Crews will also install “stop ahead” and flashers to notify drivers of the new stop signs.
Bloomington’s crash hub shows four crashes at this intersection between 2019 and 2023. Of these, none were described as a side collision.
WFIU/WTIU News contacted INDOT for more information on crashes at this intersection. Sidney Nierman, INDOT Southeast's public relations director, said right-angle crashes are the main concern at the intersection.
"Right-angle crashes represent approximately 29% of all crashes at the intersection from 2022-2024," she said in an emailed statement. "As a result, the installation of the all-way stop at S.R. 45 and Smith Road aims to enhance mobility and safety at the intersection by reducing the number of right-angle crashes that occur."
