Plans for a renovated Commons playground in Columbus include better viewing for parents and more durable materials that will last longer and endure more play.

Officials unveiled the plans this week.

The Commons opened seven and a half years ago and manager Shanda Sass says between 1,000 and 2,000 visitors use it every week.

“I would say the wear and tear has exceeded what we anticipated,” Sasse says. “Which again, is not a bad thing. We’re so thankful it’s a popular destination.”

Sass says the renovations will allow better access for parents to play with their children.

“We want to make sure the playground is full of lots of opportunities for music and sensory and exploration and sliding and climbing and spinning,” Sasse says.  “And the more interactive we can make it and interactive with each other too.”

Sass says at some point during the renovations, Commons will likely be closed. She says there’s no timeframe for the project yet.

There is no budget yet for the project. Sass said it is their next step moving forward.
