Indiana State Police say the mother of a 14-year-old who brought a gun to a Richmond middle school Thursday is the one who called to warn them about potential danger.

The teen exchanged gunfire with officers at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond before killing himself.

Police say a preliminary autopsy shows he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The autopsy also indicates no other gunshot wounds or trauma.

No students were injured in the shooting. Police say the tip likely prevented anyone else inside the school from getting hurt.

Police have identifed the teen and his mother. Indiana Public Media is not naming them because the boy is a minor.

The investigation is still ongoing.
